Natural Cork Sheet Mats 4mm 6mm 10mm Thick Various Sizes and Thickness Craft Making.
Natural cork sheet raw mats are perhaps the most versatile of all cork products. Manufactured from natural cork grains and therefore maintain most of the same characteristics attributed to cork in its natural state. For a healthy environment and genuine materials, the trend is towards a natural type of ‘Cork’.
Natural cork sheet is used for many applications such as Bulletin Boards, pinboards, Gaskets and Protective Pads, underlayment and Insulating material, Coasters, and much more. Cork’s low density makes it a suitable material for fishing floats and buoys, as well as handles for fishing rods. These raw cork sheets are very light in weight and can be easily worked without the use of special tools. Can be easily cut. !!
Cork grows naturally in only two areas of the world, the Mediterranean region of Europe, particularly the Iberian Peninsula. Where Portugal and Spain produce more than 80% of the world’s cork and Northwest Africa. It is extracted only from early May to late August when the cork can be separated from the tree without causing permanent damage. When the tree reaches 25–30 years of age and about 24 in.. in circumference, the cork can be removed for the first time. However, this first harvest almost always produces poor quality or “virgin” cork. Bark from initial harvests can be used to make flooring, shoes, insulation, and other industrial products. Subsequent extractions usually occur at intervals of 9 years, though it can take up to 13 for the cork to reach an acceptable size. If the product is of high quality it is known as “gentle” cork ideally, used to make stoppers for wine and champagne.
How Cork is manufactured:
12 Compound composition, is made by uniformly coating the cork granules with a thin layer of an additional adhesive agent. The coated granules are pressed into a mould and slowly heated (the temperature varies, depending on the adhesive used). This natural material has a lifespan of upwards of 50 years. Along with the cork’s natural elasticity and impermeability, this makes it the perfect fit for keeping your wine fresh.
